The Lakers are nearing a trade with the Wizards for Russell Westbrook, giving them a third star to pair alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis, according to multiple reports, including ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
In return, the Wizards would receive forwards Kyle Kuzma and Montrezl Harrell, shooting guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and LA’s 2021 first-round pick, Wojnarowski noted.
The deal still has some finer points to be ironed out, sources told Hoops Wire, but an agreement could be reached before the draft.
Some sources have suggested that the trade very well could entice Bradley Beal to remain with the Wizards for the long term.
“This is a trade Washington wants to make with Bradley Beal in mind, creating some salary cap flexibility for the future to add talent around him,” Wojnarowski reported. “The idea of returning to his Los Angeles roots has been appealing to Westbrook.”
Brad Turner of the LA Times added that talks are currently centered on the Lakers’ No. 22 pick, adding that Harrell opted in to his $9.7 million option a decision that would help facilitate a deal.
A deal would for Westbrook would all but ensure the departure of free agent point guard Dennis Schroder and perhaps guard Alex Caruso as well.
