The Los Angeles Lakers are signing combo guard Jordan Goodwin to an Exhibit 10 contract for training camp, per Chris Haynes of Bleacher Report.
Goodwin, 25, is 6-foot-3 and split last season with the Phoenix Suns (40 games) and Memphis Grizzlies (17), ending the year on a two-way deal.
In 57 games total, he compiled averages of 6.5 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.7 assists, shooting 36.9% from the field and 29.8% on 3-pointers. He has also spent time with the Washington Wizards since entering the NBA in 2021.
The Lakers are coming off a 47-35 season and first-round loss (to the Denver Nuggets) in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs. They are one of three teams to have not signed an outside free agent to a standard contract, along with the Cleveland Cavaliers and reigning champion Boston Celtics.
Goodwin was traded by the Suns to the Brooklyn Nets as part of a three-team deal that also involved the Grizzlies in February. He was waived by the Nets the next day, signing a 10-day deal with the Grizzlies on Feb. 13. He signed a two-way contract with the club on Feb. 24.
The Lakers have multiple backcourt players under contract, from Austin Reaves to D’Angelo Russell to Gabe Vincent to Cam Reddish and second-round pick Bronny James. Several other wing types can play in the backcourt as well.
So Goodwin will undoubtedly have his work cut out when it comes to making the standard roster, making this eventual signing likely to acquire Goodwin’s G League rights. It doesn’t hurt that he has some NBA experience, though.
An Exhibit 10 contract is a non-guaranteed minimum-salary deal. It doesn’t count toward a team’s cap unless the player makes the final roster. It also can be converted to a two-way deal before the season begins or mean guaranteed money if a player is waived and then stays on the G League club for at least 60 days.
