We knew it was just a matter of time and it only took one game of LeBron James suiting up. He did that Sunday night, in the Lakers’ second NBA preseason game. And yes, son Bronny James was on the court with him.
So it was the story of a Lakers’ superstar and rookie, sharing the floor like no one in the NBA has done before — like, never in history.
More specifically, the moment took place in the second quarter of the Lakers’ preseason game against the Suns. LeBron was already on the floor. Bronny, celebrating his 20th birthday, checked in.
“It’s surreal,” Lakers coach JJ Redick said before the game, via Ramona Shelburne of ESPN. “It’ll be fun when they’re on the court together. I’m excited about it. I’m very honored that I get to be part of history.”
Bronny appeared in the Lakers’ first preseason game, scoring two points. The No. 55 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, he is still very clearly finding his way. While he signed a regular standard three-year deal, he’s likely to spend the majority of his season with the South Bay Lakers of the G League. At least, that’s the theory.
For now, though, he will continue to make history. It won’t be long before he appears in a regular season game with LeBron, too.
“Redick added that the historic moment would happen ‘in the flow of the game’ and wouldn’t be ‘gimmicky,'” Shelburne wrote. “That’s exactly how it transpired when the younger James checked in, along with fellow rookie Dalton Knecht, to start the second quarter.”
