The last time LeBron James shot so poorly, a lot of you probably didn’t even know the NBA existed. After all, it was in October 2007 — or 17 long years ago.
But in the Lakers’ loss to the Suns on Monday, James matched his worst shooting night since that time, going 3-of-14 from the field for 11 points in a 109-105 road loss to the Suns. It was the Lakers’ first road game of the season and also their first defeat.
Granted, James did hit an important 3-pointer near the end of the game, showing that he can still make them when they count. He can also still hit 20 or more points regularly, even at the age of 39.
But James is 39, and there will likely be some games like the one we just saw against the Suns. It wasn’t a bad performance. He still gives the Lakers their best shot at winning. It was just an off night. And off nights are not uncommon once you near the age of 40.
Next up for James: A return to Cleveland to face the Cavaliers (4-0) on Wednesday. This is likely to be the toughest stop on a fairly easy road stretch that after Phoenix and Cleveland, consists of visits to the Pistons, Raptors and Grizzlies, with at least a day off between each.
I’ve always believed it’s important to the NBA league office that the Lakers start well early. They’re the one franchise that can generate a little buzz during the NFL season. So LA’s early-season schedule always tends to be on the lighter side.
Anyway, back to James. Opponents can’t expect him to shoot so poorly all season. The Lakers seem like they could be Western Conference contenders. Of course, you could say that about five other teams.
Either way, the Cavs had best be ready for LeBron. You can’t keep greatness down for long, and James is one man who knows how to put together a bounce-back game.
