The Lakers have options. The problem is deciding which ones actually help.

According to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, Los Angeles is operating just $1.1 million below the first apron and is hard-capped, meaning flexibility is limited in terms of making trades.

Still, the Lakers have more than $40 million in expiring contracts, which gives them at least a seat at the table if the right opportunity comes along.

Marks points to a clear need. Perimeter defense. The Lakers are allowing the league’s third-worst opponent three-point percentage, and that issue has lingered most of the season. Addressing it will not be simple, especially given the financial balancing act ahead.

One key decision centers on Rui Hachimura. The forward is averaging 13.3 points per game while shooting better than 53 percent from the field and is eligible for a four-year extension worth up to $114.5 million through June 30.

If the Lakers go that route, it would significantly eat into their projected cap space for next summer, which currently sits around $50 million.

Austin Reaves also factors into the equation, with a player option coming up, while Gabe Vincent, Maxi Kleber, Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart all sit on expiring or flexible deals that could be used in various combinations.

The Lakers own either their 2031 or 2032 first-round pick and have multiple future swaps available. They have assets. They just do not have much room for error.

As Marks makes clear, whatever the Lakers do next will be shaped as much by the apron as by the standings.
