The Lakers have waived veteran forward Trevor Ariza, the team announced in a press release.
According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, LA intends to sign a younger player before Sunday, the final day of the regular season.
Given that the Lakers won’t be playing in the play-in tournament or playoffs, a decision to sign a another player likely would be solely as an audition for a role on the summer team, or perhaps next season.
Ariza, 36, signed a one-year contract in August. He soon underwent ankle surgery and appeared in just 24 games. This was actually his second stint with the Lakers.
Entering the NBA in 2004, he has also spent time with the Knicks, Magic, Rockets, Hornets, Wizards, Suns, Kings, Trail Blazers and Heat. The move could signify the end of Ariza’s NBA career, though that is just speculation at this point.
