Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid injured the lateral meniscus in his left knee and will be sidelined through the weekend as the team finalizes a treatment plan.
Embiid underwent an MRI following Tuesday’s loss to the Golden State Warriors. Further evaluation revealed the extent of the injury. It was revealed earlier Wednesday that Embiid would rest for Thursday’s game at Utah.
Embiid reinjured a left knee that has hobbled him already this season in the fourth quarter of the loss to the Warriors. He left the game with 4 minutes to go.
Embiid will have missed 14 games after the weekend, which means he will only be able to miss three more, per the new collective-bargaining agreement, to be eligible to repeat as NBA MVP. The new CBA, approved by the players union, states that players must appear in no less than 65 games to be eligible for postseason awards.
Embiid is averaging an NBA-best 35.3 points, as well as 11.3 rebounds, a career-high 5.7 assists and 1.8 blocks.
