The Bucks have told NBA investigators that Giannis Antetokounmpo declined the opportunity to participate in 3-on-3 scrimmages as part of his return protocol, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Antetokounmpo, however, has told the league he believes he is healthy enough to play.
The situation is part of an ongoing NBA investigation into Milwaukee’s handling of Antetokounmpo’s injury status and potential violations of the league’s player participation policy.
Antetokounmpo has not played since March 15 due to what the team has described as a left knee hyperextension and bone bruise. He has appeared in just 36 games this season.
Speaking Friday, the two-time MVP made it clear he disagrees with the team’s decision to hold him out.
“I’m available to play… Right now. I’m available,” Antetokounmpo said. “I don’t know what game is being played right here, I just don’t wanna be a part of it.”
He added that being sidelined has created tension.
“For somebody to come and tell me to not play or not to compete, it’s like a slap in my face,” he said.
The league’s investigation has included interviews with Antetokounmpo, team officials and medical staff.
Milwaukee, which will miss the playoffs for the first time in a decade, faces increased scrutiny as it navigates the situation heading into the offseason.
