Oklahoma City Thunder guard Josh Giddey‘s alleged inappropriate relationship was a one-night stand that took place two years ago, when Giddey was 19 years old, according to a report from Australian news outlet Code Sports.
Giddey, 21, was told the girl was also 19, according to reports.
While police in Newport Beach released a statement that they are investigating the allegations, Giddey reportedly met the girl at a nightclub in Oklahoma City. She currently attends high school in Newport Beach, which is why police there would be involved.
Per the New York Post:
“The Post has identified the Oklahoma City club featured in the video and it has a policy of admitting people over the age of 18.
“After realizing the girl was under 18 the next day, Giddey is said to have broken off the relationship, according to the sources who spoke to Code Sports.”
The age of consent in Oklahoma is 16, which is the age recognized by federal law. But the age of consent in California is 18.
As we relayed here, the investigation reportedly hit a snag as the girl and her family have not been cooperative with police.
“The Post has seen evidence that appears to confirm the girl in the pictures is still a high school student who would have been under 18 years of age in 2021,” the outlet wrote. “She has not been publicly identified and has not spoken publicly since the alleged relationship was exposed last week.”
The investigation into Giddey began after a social media post claimed he had an inappropriate relationship with a minor. That social media account has since been deactivated, seemingly by the account owner.
An NBA spokesman said a week ago the league is “looking into” the matter. Giddey has continued to play during the investigation.
