Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James always leaves people guessing when it comes to his future. And guess what? That’s his right.
James did it back with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2010, when he held The Decision Show and bolted for the Miami Heat. He did it again four years later, when he left the Heat and returned to Cleveland.
Then again four years after that, when he left the Cavs for the Lakers. Each time, James did it as a free agent. He didn’t demand a trade and no front office decided to move him for a great return. He just left when his contract was up.
Well, here we are again. James is back to sending out cryptic messages on social media (the latest was an hourglass that signaled that time is running out) and keeping us guessing on what he’ll do when the season ends.
James, 39, has a player option on his contract. If he declines it, he’ll become an unrestricted free agent.
When asked by reporters Saturday if he knows what he’ll do with that option, James gave a two-letter answer.
“No,” he said.
Oh boy. Let the speculation begin.
He also declined to elaborate on the hourglass emoji. That’s not surprising — nor is it necessary. It’s probably more fun for the rest of us to guess.
And we can safely assume James is frustrated. While the Lakers stunned the Celtics in Boston on Thursday (with James and Anthony Davis on the sideline), it’s been another uneven season for LA. The offseason roster moves have resulted in nothing of substance.
Suddenly, we’re less than a week away from the trade deadline. If there were ever a time for an hourglass emoji, yeah, that was it.
Time is indeed running out for the Lakers, for James, and for this season to end in something more than another disappointment. When you have LeBron, you play for championships.
Do the Lakers look equipped to win one?
Yeah, no.
