At the end of last season, all the talk was LeBron James. That’s really nothing new. It’s been that way for about 20 years.
But the conversation changed this time. Now, questions about how much longer James will play have come to light. He sort of had a hand in that, walking away from the Lakers’ loss to the Nuggets in the Western Conference Finals and leaving some doubt about his future.
Today, though, James has returned, at the age of 38, to try to make another run. Will it be his last?
“I don’t know. I don’t know,” he told reporters on media day. “I’m happy right now, I’m excited, looking forward to tomorrow. I don’t know what the end of this road, or this season, looks like.”
James and the Lakers struggled early last year. It looked like another lost season. But then came the trade deadline, and then the offseason.
Lakers GM Rob Pelinka keeps tinkering, keeps adding parts, and keeps hoping James and Anthony Davis can stay healthy. If that happens, the Lakers may be entering the season with their best roster of the James era yet.
And that’s a good thing for LA. After all, beyond this season, LeBron James doesn’t know what the future holds, and therefore, neither do the Lakers.
