Paolo Banchero made a statement Monday night, and what an NBA statement it was. The second-year Magic power forward put on a show for the ages, scoring 50 points to carry Orlando to a 119-115 win over the Pacers.
He tied the franchise record with 37 points in the first half alone, matching the record Tracy McGrady set back in 2003.
“Man, I’m tired; I’m tired as hell,” Banchero told reporters after the first 50-point effort in the NBA this season. “But it was a hell of a game.”
It was the kind of night Orlando fans won’t soon forget — and neither will the Magic organization. Banchero’s performance marked the franchise’s first 50-point game in more than 20 years, a drought dating back to McGrady’s 62-point outburst in 2004.
Banchero, though, did more than just score; he added 13 rebounds and nine assists, becoming just the second-youngest player in league history to hit 50 points with 10 rebounds and five assists in a game. Only a young LeBron James got there faster.
But the Banchero’s fatigue is only proof of the work he puts in. Shooting 13-of-17 in the first half, finishing at 16-of-26 overall … it was the kind of game that made the Magic’s decision to draft him No. 1 look like a no-brainer.
This wasn’t just Banchero’s best night; it was a night that cemented his place among the Magic greats, in the company of McGrady, Shaquille O’Neal, and Nick Anderson. His 50-point game wasn’t just about the numbers; it was about setting a tone, showing that this young Magic team, led by its star, might be ready to make some noise. If there were any doubts about Banchero’s ability to be the face of a franchise, they’re fading fast.
“It was just being in the zone,” Banchero said. “Felt like I was in an open gym, back at home, just working on my game. Every shot felt like it was going in and it’s a good feeling when you’ve got a day like that. Not every game is going to be like that, but I’m glad today was.”
