The NBA has named Malik Rose head of G League basketball operations, with the news becoming official via league press release.
Rose won two championships as a power forward with the Spurs, moving into the broadcast booth upon retirement in 2009. He moved into the Hawks’ front office in 2015, winning G League Executive of the Year honors with the Erie BayHawks three years later.
After that, he was named assistant general manager of the Pistons, ultimately moving into a role as one of the NBA’s vice presidents of basketball operations.
“We are thrilled to have Malik join the NBA G League as head of basketball operations,” G League commissioner Shareef Abdur-Rahim said in the release. “With his success as a player at the highest levels of the game and extensive background as an executive in both the NBA and G League, Malik has the experience, vision and expertise to help accelerate our progress and further deepen the connection between the two leagues.”
With the G League, Rose will front the efforts to expand the talent pipeline and advance integration of basketbakll operations between the NBA and G League. He will also focus on “basketball innovation and competition,” per the release, while overseeing the G League Ignite franchise.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to transition from NBA Basketball Operations to this exciting position alongside Shareef and a talented staff with the NBA G League,” Rose said. “As someone who benefited greatly from his experience in the NBA G League, I know firsthand its importance to the NBA’s business and see enormous potential for continued growth.”
