Mavericks big man Anthony Davis is likely headed for surgery to repair ligament damage in his left hand, sources told ESPN’s Shams Charania. A surgical procedure would sideline Davis for multiple months and could effectively end his season.
Even so, Davis has not been removed from the trade block. Charania reports the Mavericks have reopened discussions with multiple teams that have expressed interest in the 10-time All-Star. Any acquiring team would likely view Davis as a longer-term piece, with an eye toward a possible return around the playoffs and a role beyond this season.
Davis suffered the injury late in the fourth quarter of last Thursday’s loss at Utah, when his hand bent back awkwardly while defending Lauri Markkanen.
Follow-up evaluations confirmed ligament damage, prompting Davis to seek multiple medical opinions before weighing surgical versus non-surgical options. Surgery would represent the longer recovery path.
Davis’ trade value has already been affected by durability concerns, his age and a maximum contract that pays him $54.1 million this season, along with his reported desire for an extension. An extended absence would further complicate negotiations, potentially forcing Dallas to sell low.
Former general manager Nico Harrison is no longer with the organization, leaving interim decision-makers Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi to chart the course.
The Hawks and Raptors have been most frequently linked to Davis. Atlanta is viewed as the more realistic option, though salary-matching restrictions would limit which contracts could be included in a deal before the Feb. 5 deadline.
