The Mavericks have been flying in a personal chef so Irving has vegan meals ready to eat during Ramadan when the sun goes down.

After a recent game, Irving spoke to NBA reporters about playing during Ramadan.

Ramadan is a special month, so it’s a special time and just try not to think about the suffering too much and really focus on the journey with God and the path that you’re on,” Irving said. “And just stay focused on that and stay disciplined. It’s a difficult journey and to be able to play 48 minutes and not have a drink or eat any food is nothing short of a miracle. So there’s definitely a universal God out there that’s protecting me and I have to give credit to him.”

Irving is averaging 25.4 points, 5.1 rebounds and 5.2 assists for the Mavericks this season while shooting 49.3% from the field, 40.9% from beyond the arc and 90.9% from the free-throw line. He hit a game-winning left-handed shot versus the Denver Nuggets on March 17.

“Man, majority of it is instinctual and comes from preparation for hours that no one sees,” Irving told NBA reporters about his game-winning shot with his left hand. “I saw (Nikola) Jokic taking away my pull-up going left. I knew that he was going to come up, but I didn’t know he was going to commit like that, so he was forcing me inside the 3-point line.

“As soon as I felt him kind of behind me, I was like, oh, I have my left hand. It’s wide open, so why not go to it?”

With Irving and Luka Doncic leaving the day, the Mavericks are 40-29. They are in seventh place in the Western Conference standings.
