The Mavericks are planning a move.

The team is not expected to renew its lease at American Airlines Center beyond 2031 and is actively searching for a site to build a new arena complex. The vision goes beyond basketball, with plans that could include a large-scale development and a luxury hotel.

Rick Welts was brought in to lead the effort, bringing experience from overseeing the Warriors’ Chase Center project.

Finding space has been the challenge.

Reports indicate the Mavericks want roughly 50 acres, something difficult to secure within Dallas city limits, especially downtown. That has opened the door to alternative options.

Irving (the city, not the player) remains a strong candidate, particularly with land already tied to the franchise. There are complications tied to potential casino elements in Texas, which could impact plans.

Dallas is still the preference. But with limited space, the search is widening.
