Mavericks’ Jason Kidd: Khris Middleton is buyout candidate

The Mavericks could have a decision looming with veteran forward Khris Middleton.

Prior to Friday’s loss to Memphis, coach Jason Kidd confirmed Middleton is weighing whether to pursue a buyout ahead of Sunday’s deadline to remain playoff-eligible with another team.

“That’s up to Khris,” Kidd said. “We support whatever decision he makes if he’s going to stay or if he’s gonna get bought out. But I think he’s gotta make that decision here pretty quick.”

Middleton, 34, is on an expiring contract and is evaluating whether to finish the season in Dallas or join a contender. The Denver Nuggets and San Antonio Spurs are among the teams believed to have interest.

An Eastern Conference executive told DallasHoopsJournal.com that Middleton might benefit from remaining with the Mavericks, noting he would forfeit his Bird rights if he agrees to a buyout.

“He might be best off playing this season out in Dallas where they’re letting him play his game and build some momentum,” the executive said. “He’s going to get minutes and touches in Dallas. That may not be consistent on a contender.”

The executive added that Middleton’s presence could help the Mavericks’ younger core, including Cooper Flagg, while also acknowledging the team’s draft positioning considerations.
