The phone is on. The pressure is not.
The Mavericks continue to take calls on Anthony Davis, but team sources tell Christian Clark and Sam Amick of The Athletic that there’s no urgency to do anything with them.
That’s intentional.
Dallas has signaled it wants to see what Davis looks like alongside Kyrie Irving and Cooper Flagg, and can even envision a version of this where Davis stays put for the long haul. No rush. No forced timelines. At least not publicly.
Earlier this week, a report suggested Davis would prefer to remain in Dallas and sign an extension. That part tracks. The hesitation comes from the other side of the table.
Davis’ representation at Klutch Sports, led by CEO Rich Paul, isn’t convinced the Mavericks are actually motivated to extend him. And if that’s the case, league sources indicate they wouldn’t mind seeing Davis land with a team more inclined to get a new deal done.
No trade request has been made. None appears imminent.
But Clark and Amick note that Paul has encouraged Dallas to be more proactive — to test the market rather than wait for it to come to them.
Which leaves the Mavericks in a familiar spot. Listening. Measuring. Holding leverage.
