Jason Kidd, Koby Altman among names linked to Mavericks’ GM search

The Mavericks are still in the early stages of their search for a new general manager, but the list of potential names continues to evolve.

As previously reported, Dallas owner Patrick Dumont has aimed high, with executives such as Sam Presti (Thunder), Tim Connelly (Timberwolves), Brad Stevens (Celtics) and Koby Altman (Cavaliers) all at least loosely on the radar. However, none of those options appears especially realistic, with Connelly viewed as the only one who could even be attainable.

That has led to some broader thinking.

According to Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix, Mavericks coach Jason Kidd is another name worth keeping an eye on, even if the situation is complicated.

“I also wouldn’t dismiss Jason Kidd,” Mannix said, via FanDuel’s Run It Back. “He’s very well respected for what he’s done in Dallas. He’s very well liked by ownership.”

Kidd’s candidacy would come with a clear hurdle. The Mavericks are believed to value continuity, particularly with rising star Cooper Flagg entering his second NBA season.

“The only thing holding him back is Dallas wants to keep him on the bench,” Mannix added.

In other words, there may be mutual interest, but timing could be an issue.

Meanwhile, former Warriors GM Bob Myers has also been linked to the position, though he is currently with Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment and may be a long shot. Interim co-GMs Matt Riccardi and Michael Finley remain in the mix as well.

“It’s the most important decision that the organization is going to make…,” CEO Rick Welts told reporters, via Marc Stein of The Stein Line. “So we are going to take our time and get it right.”
