Mavericks weighing more than trades as Anthony Davis timeline lingers

The biggest question hovering over for the Mavericks right now is not about the deadline itself. It is about Anthony Davis.

The Mavericks announced Davis will be sidelined roughly six weeks due to ligament damage in his left hand.

That timetable alone pushes him right up against the trade deadline conversation and maybe beyond it.

According to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, Dallas continues to listen on Davis. But there is no mandate coming from ownership to force a deal.

That part matters.

If the Mavericks do not receive what they consider real value, they are comfortable holding. And if Davis is still on the roster after February 5, the discussion shifts entirely.

At that point, it becomes less about trades and more about risk management.

Is it worth bringing Davis back this season at all? Or is the smarter play to protect the asset, protect the hand, and revisit everything in the summer?

Those conversations are already happening quietly. The next few weeks will decide how loud they get.
