The Mavericks are preaching patience, but the rest of the league is preparing for movement.
That is the read from Shams Charania of ESPN, who reports that Dallas wants to see its roster healthier before making any big decisions, yet remains open to moving several veterans if the right offers come in.
Opposing teams are operating as if those veterans will be available. League personnel told Charania that Dallas is willing to discuss Anthony Davis, Daniel Gafford, Klay Thompson and D’Angelo Russell. The Pistons, Raptors and Hawks are among the teams expected to show interest in Davis, who could be viewed as a piece that elevates a contender in the East.
Dallas has also signaled it would consider extending Davis if he stays. He is eligible for a four-year, $275 million deal this summer.
Thompson is owed $16.6 million this year and prefers to finish his career on a contender. Gafford’s recent extension allows him to be moved before the deadline. Russell is on a two-year taxpayer mid-level deal with a player option for next season.
Dallas has not committed to a direction yet, but the phone lines around the league are warming up.
