There’s growing belief inside the Dallas Mavericks that rookie standout Cooper Flagg is closing in on a return.

According to Marc Stein of The Stein Line, optimism is building that Flagg’s left midfoot sprain — which has sidelined him since the All-Star break — is nearly behind him.

Flagg is listed as doubtful for Tuesday’s game at Charlotte, and a return there appears unlikely. But Dallas continues its road swing with stops in Orlando, Boston and Toronto later this week.

The Boston game would carry extra significance. Flagg grew up in Maine, and it would mark his first NBA appearance in the region.

The No. 1 overall pick has not played since Feb. 10. Before the injury, he was averaging 20.6 points, 6.6 rebounds and 4.1 assists, firmly in the Rookie of the Year conversation.

Dallas has been cautious with the 19-year-old. Now, it sounds like the wait may not last much longer.
