Mavs’ Anthony Davis doesn’t need hand surgery, still in trade talks

The picture around Anthony Davis’ left hand became clearer Tuesday night.

ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that Davis will not require surgery after receiving a second opinion from hand specialist Dr. Steven Shin in Los Angeles. Davis will instead be re-evaluated in six weeks.

That update followed a day of mixed messaging. Earlier, Marc Stein reported there was optimism Davis could return before the end of March even if surgery proved necessary.

The possibility that surgery could be season-ending appeared to be the part Davis took issue with, posting on social media, “Y’all better stop listening to all these lies on these apps!”

At the time, it was unclear whether Davis was disputing the need for surgery, the recovery timeline, or reports that the Mavericks had reopened trade discussions involving him.

Charania’s original report stated surgery would sideline Davis for several months and could end his season, particularly if he remained in Dallas.

A trade scenario could have altered that calculus, with an acquiring team potentially aiming for a late-season or playoff return.

Davis suffered ligament damage last Thursday against Utah while defending Lauri Markkanen and has since sought multiple medical opinions.
