The Mavericks have opened talks on a contract extension with center Christian Wood, according to Marc Stein of The Stein Line.
This follows a similar report from ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, who wrote that the sides were beginning to explore an extension.
Both Stein and MacMahon reported that the Mavs would prefer a shorter deal, such as two years, as opposed to a long-term extension.
In the event the Mavs and Wood can’t come to an agreement within the month, the team very well could explore trading him ahead of the Feb. 9 deadline, Stein added. Wood, 27, will become a free agent in July if he does not reach a deal with Dallas.
Acquired from the Rockets in an offseason trade, Wood is having a nice season, averaging 17.8 points and 7.9 rebounds, shooting 54 percent from the field, in 35 appearances.
“I’m happy to be here. That’s what I’ll say,” Wood told reporters on Christmas Day. “The vibe is good. … I’m open to (staying).”
