Former Hornets coach James Borrego and former Knicks and Suns coach Jeff Hornacek are among the likely top targets for an assistant coaching opening with Jason Kidd and the Mavericks, per Marc Stein of The Stein Line.
Borrego, 45, was unemployed this season after coaching the Hornets for four years. They improved by 10 wins in each of his final three.
Overall he compiled a 138-163 record with Charlotte. He has also served as an assistant with the Pelicans, Magic and Spurs.
Hornacek, 59, is a former NBA guard who played alongside legends John Stockton and Karl Malone with the Jazz.
He went on the become coach of the Suns (2013-16) and Knicks (2016-18), compiling a record of 161-216. He has since served as an assistant with the Rockets (2020-22) and spent this season as a coaching consultant for Will Hardy and the Jazz.
Along with Borrego and Hornacek, Stein cited former Trail Blazers coach Terry Stotts and ex-Lakers, Magic and Pacers coach Frank Vogel as potential assistants in Dallas.
Kidd was Vogel’s top assistant in LA for two years. But it believed Vogel is pursuing a head coaching job for the time being, Stein wrote.
