Mavs’ Jason Kidd denies being involved in Luka Doncic trade decision

Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd said Friday that he was not involved in last season’s decision to trade Luka Doncic, pushing back on recent comments from Mark Cuban.

“Cuban has mentioned that I knew about the trade,” Kidd said, via The Athletic and Dallas Hoops Journal. “Unfortunately, as I have said, I was not part of the process. I was informed at the 11th hour. And that’s the truth.”

Cuban, now a minority stakeholder in the franchise, had referenced “our coach and general manager” when discussing the deal in a recent podcast appearance.

Kidd said he contacted Cuban directly following those remarks to clarify his position.

“I was called … into the room, and (former GM) Nico Harrison told me that there was a trade that was going to go public at 11 o’clock,” Kidd said. “That’s what happened. … I waited until 11 o’clock, and that trade, the world changed.”

According to Tim Cowlishaw of The Dallas Morning News, the Mavericks’ ownership group had final say on the deal, which remains one of the most controversial moves in franchise history.
