Former Rockets coach Mike D’Antoni and ex-Nets coach Kenny Atkinson appear to be the two finalists for the Hornets’ coaching vacancy, per Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report.
Charlotte is looking to replace James Borrego, fired after three seasons.
“Neither D’Antoni nor Atkinson have met with Hornets owner Michael Jordan as of yet,” RealGM relayed. “Those meetings are expected to take place soon, when Jordan returns from a postseason vacation.”
Along with the Rockets, D’Antoni has served as head coach of the Nuggets, Knicks, Lakers and “24 Seconds or Less” Suns of Steve Nash and Amar’e Stoudemire. He spent this past season as a coaching advisor to Willie Green and the Pelicans. D’Antoni has also assisted Nash with the Nets.
Several reports have suggested D’Antoni is the frontrunner to land the job, as his wide-open style could mesh well with Hornets point guard LaMelo Ball.
Meanwhile, Atkinson served as an assistant under Tyronn Lue with the Clippers this past season. He was also considered a finalist for the Lakers job, which eventually went to Darvin Ham, a former Bucks assistant.
