The Hornets have begun to interview for their head-coaching vacancy, with former Rockets coach Mike D’Antoni in the mix, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
Charlotte is looking to replace James Borrego, fired after three seasons. D’Antoni is considered a “serious” candidate, Wojnarowski reported.
The Hornets also intend to meet with Warriors assistant and ex-Nets coach Kenny Atkinson, Bucks assistant Darvin Ham and Mavericks assistant Sean Sweeney, Wojnarowski added.
D’Antoni has also coached the Lakers, Suns, Nuggets and Knicks, instituting a fast-paced game plan that features plenty of 3-point attempts. His teams are generally among the NBA’s highest-scoring.
Current Hornets GM Mitch Kupchak was the man who hired D’Antoni with the Lakers, when Kupchak was GM in LA.
D’Antoni, 70, has been named NBA Coach of the Year on two occasions and sports a 672-527 record in 16 seasons overall. He spent the previous season as a coaching consultant with Willie Green and the Pelicans.
