Former NBA guard and current Lakers assistant coach Miles Simon is in talks to become head coach of the South Bay Lakers of the G League, per Zach Lowe of ESPN.
Simon, 45, was an assistant at Arizona from 2005-08 and has been serving in the same roile with the Lakers since 2017. In between, he worked as an analyst at ESPN.
A second-round pick of the Magic in 1998 (No. 42 overall), Simon spent the majority of his playing days overseas. He appeared imn just five games with Orlando, but went on to become one of the most-decorated players in the history of the old Continental Basketball Association.
That league has since folded, leaving Simon as the all-time record-holder in consecutive made free throws at 60.
South Bay opted out of the G League’s single-site season in 2020-21. Right now, both former Gonzaga guards Joel Ayayi and ex-Oklahoma guard Austin Reaves are the two players on the roster, as each as signed a two-way contract with the Lakers.
If Simon were to be named coach, he would still retaim his role on coach Frank Vogel’s staff with the partent club, Lowe reported.
