Multiple names already linked to Pelicans coaching job

The Pelicans didn’t even make it 24 hours into the post-Willie Green era before names started circulating.

And one of the first belongs to former UConn coach and Nets interim boss Kevin Ollie, according to Ian Begley of SNY.tv.

Ollie, who won a national title with the Huskies in 2014 and later coached Overtime Elite, is firmly on New Orleans’ early list.

He also interviewed for the Pistons’ job last offseason and has long been viewed as a future NBA head coach.

Interim coach James Borrego will also be considered for the full-time role, Begley adds.

Borrego was hired last summer with the expectation he could be a “break-glass-in-case-of-emergency” option if the Pelicans ever moved on from Green. And now here we are.

But don’t assume the job is Borrego’s to lose.

Chris Dodson of ClutchPoints reports that while Borrego is respected by new exec Joe Dumars, there’s skepticism he’ll ultimately get the permanent job.

Per Dodson, Dumars is “quietly” searching for someone who can “completely shake up the organization and reset the culture.”

Dodson lists several external candidates he views as strong fits — including Michael Malone and Taylor Jenkins.

The Pelicans fired Green on Saturday after a 2-10 start, just one year removed from a 21-61 season derailed by injuries.

Dumars will run the search, not owner Gayle Benson, who publicly reiterated this week that basketball decisions now run directly through him.
