Multiple reports say Wizards newcomer Anthony Davis out for season

All signs continue to point toward Anthony Davis being done for the season.

A league source confirmed to The Athletic that Davis is unlikely to play again in 2025-26, with the Wizards expected to provide a formal update in the coming days.

When asked about the report, head coach Brian Keefe stopped short of confirming it.

“I can’t confirm that, no,” Keefe said, via Brian Lewis The New York Post.

The expectation around the league, however, has not changed. Davis, acquired from the Mavericks ahead of the deadline, is believed to be sidelined for the remainder of the season as he recovers from groin and hand injuries, per NBA insider Chris Haynes.

Health questions followed Davis throughout the process. He suffered ligament damage to his left hand that was expected to keep him out most of February, and his injury history since arriving in Dallas last year included issues with his adductor, eye, calf, groin and hand.

In 20 appearances this season, he averaged 20.4 points and 11.1 rebounds in just over 31 minutes per game.

Washington has little incentive to rush him back. The Wizards are focused on protecting a top-eight–protected 2026 first-round pick and improving their lottery position. Trae Young, acquired last month, has yet to debut and remains out through the All-Star break, though the team has said he is not being shut down.

That does not appear to be the case with Davis.

In a phone interview with The Athletic’s David Aldridge, Davis said his visit with Wizards ownership and the front office was “great,” but acknowledged the larger questions.

“At this point in my career, I want to compete for a championship,” Davis said. “Whether that’s here or elsewhere, I have no idea.”

Davis added that while he likes Washington and remains open-minded, clarity matters.

“It’s hard to say I would definitely stay without the proper plan,” he said. “It’s year by year. They could be the No. one team in the East next year.”
