To the surprise of pretty much nobody, Team USA completed its run in group play by going undefeated. Now, it’s on to the Olympics quarterfinals and knockout round.
In this particular game, Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards scored a game-high 26 points on a sizzling 11-of-15 shooting, leading the USA to a 104-83 hammer job against Puerto Rico.
Afterward, Edwards told Mike Tirico of NBC that he was honored to keep getting the ball from the likes of LeBron James, Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant, his hoops heroes as a younger player.
“It’s been the best fun ever, man,” Edwards said. “It’s been incredible, a dream come true.”
Joe Embiid added 15 points in his return to the starting lineup. Durant tacked on 11, and James, Anthony Davis and Jayson Tatum had 10 apiece. Jrue Holiday missed the game with what is said to be a minor ankle injury.
New Orleans Pelicans point guard Jose Alvarado scored 18 for Puerto Rico, which failed to win a game in group play and is headed home from the Olympics.
The Americans very well could face Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo and Greece in the first game of the quarterfinals, though some of that depends on what happens next in the group stage.
Team USA will be the No. 1 seed in the knockout round — meaning whoever it faces next will be the No. 8 seed.
“Their collective ball pressure, rim defense and rebounding was just too much for Puerto Rico to handle,” wrote Brian Windhorst of ESPN. “No one has handled it yet.”
