The Cleveland Cavaliers are one of two teams left searching for a coach. The other is the Detroit Pistons, and they just fired their coach on Wednesday, two months after the season ended. Welcome to another NBA summer.
So why is the Cavs’ search taking so long? Well, maybe because no one has swept them off their feet yet. But also maybe because they haven’t been able to interview everyone they’ve hoped. That can sometimes be the case, too. (For instance, we’ve heard reports that Golden State Warriors assistant and Cavs candidate Kenny Atkinson has been overseas.)
Anyway, I discussed all that and more on the latest Hoops Wire NBA show on 330 to Go. Give it a watch/listen on YouTube right here or directly below.
As I said on the show, I do think the Cavs will have a coach next week, perhaps ahead of Wednesday’s NBA Draft. Cleveland isn’t picking until No. 20 overall in a draft that’s expected to be weaker. But there is always a diamond in the rough. For instance, Craig Porter Jr. didn’t get drafted at all — and really helped the Cavs a lot when given the opportunity.
So you never know where or how you might find help. That’s what makes the offseason so much fun for diehards like us. But first, of course, the Cavs (and Pistons) need to find someone to coach the team.
Meanwhile, the Lakers decided to go with JJ Redick as their next coach. What do you think about that hire?
