The NBA and FIBA are moving from concept to conversations.

According to Aris Barkas of Eurohoops, the two sides will begin discussions in January with prospective teams and ownership groups as the next step toward launching a new European basketball league. The organizations confirmed the plans in a joint press release issued Monday.

The proposal includes permanent franchises, along with a merit-based pathway for clubs to qualify annually through FIBA’s Basketball Champions League or a separate end-of-season tournament.

The league would also align its calendar with domestic leagues and national team schedules, avoiding conflicts with international play.

Financial backing is part of the pitch as well, with promises to invest in domestic leagues, club academies and player development.

“Our conversations with various stakeholders in Europe have reinforced our belief that an enormous opportunity exists,” NBA commissioner Adam Silver said.
