NBA GMs Discuss Rules Favoring Offense, Draft at Annual Meetings

NBA general managers conducted their annual meetings in Chicago on Tuesday and discussed an array of topics, with some of the talks becoming “lively,” according to Zach Lowe of ESPN.NBA Wilson Ball

Among those topics, per Lowe: Whether the game has tilted to favor big offensive outputs too much. It seems many among the league’s GMs are indeed wondering if there is anything that can be done to help the defense.

“I always see, ‘so-and-so is a lockdown defender, we need to get that guy’ from fans on social media,” one GM told Hoops Wire. “No, he’s not. He’s just a good defender based on the rules. I feel as if the league doesn’t want lockdown defenders. They want everyone to score 50 points and the rules show that. … There has to be some sort of balance.”

Along with that, team executives talked about the need to continue to curtail load management, with perhaps even stiffer penalties for resting healthy players. Already, rules are being in put in place for next season, with players now needing to appear in at least 65 games to be eligible for major awards (and the money that comes with them).

Per Lowe, NBA GMs also discussed:

  • Bringing back escalating fines for players who “flop,” or fake a foul to get a call.
  • Turning the NBA Draft into a two-day event, presumably with one round each day. League sources have told Hoops Wire the NBA could expand its draft into three rounds within the next four or five years, just because of the buzz it creates.
