The contract of top ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski is set to expire in the summer of 2022, perhaps opening the door for a rival news outlet to steal him away.
Andrew Marchand of the New York Post relayed that Wojnarowski’s contract is up in less than a year. Marchand actually mentioned Wojnarowski’s contract situation in a story about ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan, who has re-signed with the sports cable news network.
Passan had received “substantial interest” from multiple gambling websites, which are “looking at sports content folks as a way to entice bettors to their platforms,” Marchand reported. He listed DraftKings, FanDuel and Caesars as being among those that had an interest in Passan.
With that in mind, it’s possible that such companies would pursue Wojnarowski, or even NFL insider Adam Schefter, whose contract is set to expire at around the same time as Wojnarowski’s, Marchand wrote.
Still, most around the industry suspect Wojnarowski’s situation will play out like Passan’s, who re-signed with ESPN before he could even hit free agency.
Wojnarowski, 52, arrived at ESPN in July 2017 after nearly a decade at Yahoo! Sports. He has more social media followers than any other NBA reporter, including the 5 million on Twitter.
