NBA League Pass is generally reserved for NBA games, but perhaps it will soon become something a little more — and broadcast games involving generational prospects.
In this case, that would be French center Victor Wembanyama, the sure-fire top pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. Wembanyama currently plays for the Metropolitans 92 of French league.
According to RMC Sport radio, via EuroHoops, the NBA intends to buy the rights to Metropolitans games from France’s LNB league, then make those games available as an option on NBA League Pass.
Per EuroHoops: “The negotiations went even further since the NBA will also buy the rights to the Leaders Cup, the play-offs, and the highlights of the French championship.”
Any games involving Wembanyama’s Metropolitans or other French teams would be called in English on League Pass, EuroHoops added.
Wembanyama is 7-foot-4 and still just 18-years old, but has the look of a franchise changer in the NBA. One NBA GM called his talent “a race to the bottom” for teams that will be playing the draft lottery next summer.
“Victor distorts basketball reality,” on GM told Jonathan Givony and Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. “The tank/trade market will really shift after that showing. It feels like … a race to the bottom like we’ve never seen.”
Another GM compared Wembanyama to Kevin Durant. Only taller.
“He’s a 7-foot-4 Durant who blocks shots — and he’s not even close to what he’s going to be,” the GM told Givony and Wojnarowski. “He will be the most hyped player since LeBron (James).”
I already feel bad for NBA GM that strategically tanks away the season — and still winds up with No. 3 overall pick next summer.
