The NBA competition committee is considering adding a second coach’s challenge if the first challenge is successful, per Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports.
Currently, teams receive one challenge per game — successful or not. According to Haynes’ report, that would mean if you get the first challenge correct, you would be offered one more. If a call is not overturned, well, it seems you would be out of luck.
So this would be similar to the one-and-one rule with free throws. Make the first, you get a second. Miss the first, and it’s over.
Mostly, a second challenge may keep coaches from preserving their right to question a referee’s call until the final 2 minutes of a game, as coaches so often do now. And wisely so. If you only get one challenge per game, you’re going to want to hang on to it until the outcome is in the balance.
Now, coaches will have a chance to “win” a second challenge, assuming this idea is approved. If so, it will be instituted as soon as next season, per Haynes.
