Woj’s Final News Bomb: Isaac Okoro’s Contract Extension With Cavs

The newsmakers dominated the NBA news on Wednesday, with ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski announcing his retirement and rumors of his replacement running rampant.Adrian Wojnarowski, NBA, ESPN

But before Woj dropped the bomb about his decision to leave for the St. Bonaventure, he tweeted about the Cavaliers. It took place over the weekend, when Wojnarowski broke the news that the Cavs and Isaac Okoro had agreed to a three-year contract extension.

“Okoro — who has started 216 games in his four seasons with Cavs — returns to the core of an Eastern Conference contender and his deal completes a productive franchise offseason of retaining and extending their key players,” Wojnarowski wrote. “Okoro’s return solidifies a key defensive anchor for Cleveland and gives him a chance to make a run with a franchise that he’s grown up with now in the NBA.”

So assuming Woj never returns to an NBA insider role — and there is every reason to believe he won’t — his final news tweet will forever be centered on the Cavs. Considering he’s headed for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame someday, well, that’s probably cool for Cavs fans. Perhaps that tweet (or post to X or whatever) will be enshrined in the Hall to exemplify Woj’s extraordinary work.

Anyway, this is just fun for the sake of it, and truth is, Wojnarowski is going to be dearly missed by the NBA community. His name has shown up more than anyone on this very website, with only Shams Charania of The Athletic serving as his primary competition. Interestingly, as I wrote earlier, Charania is viewed as the insider most likely to replace Wojnarowski at ESPN.

As for Okoro and the Cavs, we have that full story here. As Woj first reported, the deal is for three years and $38 million.

With NBA training camp less than two weeks away, ESPN will need to move quickly to replace Woj. But the Cavs, it seems, are mostly ready to roll.
