The news of Adrian Wojnarowski deciding to retire has taken the NBA by storm. It may be the biggest story of the offseason.
Woj is taking his talents to St. Bonaventure, his alma mater, where will he serve as GM of the men’s basketball program. He will no longer be dropping basketball news bombs, and without question, he will be missed by the NBA community. At the same time, many around the league feel a certain sense of relief for him.
After all, performing the job at the highest level, as Wojnarowski did, comes at a certain cost.
It means constantly staying in touch with sources, which in turn means hundreds of phone calls — and thousands of texts. Basically, it means a never-ending cycle of screen time. So much so that insiders such as Woj have time for little else.
Well, ESPN baseball insider Jeff Passan can relate, and he gave away a Woj secret during an interview on a podcast co-hosted by John Ourand and Andrew Marchand back in October of 2022.
“I’ve known Woj for a long time, and I think he is the absolute best at what we do,” Passan said. “And Woj has this fantasy where one day — I don’t know when it’s going to be — but when he’s done, he’s going to take his phone and throw it in the ocean.”
Again, Passan and other top sports insiders can relate.
“You know what? The ocean throw of the phone is a dream that I have adopted and will steal at some point,” Passan admitted. “Because I’m a slave to it. That’s the reality. I look at my screen time numbers every week, and seriously I will ask myself, ‘What are you doing?’
“No, seriously. Is this worth it? What are you doing with your life?”
For Wojnarowski, Passan, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter and other sports media names you know, the day will come when they decide to live their lives like normal people who do normal things.
For Wojnarowski, that time has arrived. And now, it appears the basketball world will not hear not a bomb, but a splash.
.@wojespn and @JeffPassan share the same dream: They both want to throw their phone into the ocean.
