Pelicans’ Dejounte Murray To Miss Rest Of Season After Reportedly Tearing Achilles

New Orleans Pelicans guard Dejounte Murray suffered a torn Achilles tendon and will miss the remainder of the season, per NBA insider Chris Haynes.Pelicans, Dejounte Murray, NBA

Murray is in his first year with the Pelicans after an offseason trade with the Atlanta Hawks. And it’s just been one thing after another in New Orleans — with just about everything that’s gone wrong being injury-related. Plenty, of course, has gone wrong.

The injury occurred during a 118-116 home loss to the reigning champion Boston Celtics on Friday night, a game in which Murray played just eight minutes and scored four points before exiting.

He’s averaging 17.9 points, 6.5 rebounds and 7.6 assists in 30 games with the Pelicans, who have barely been able to piece a full lineup together at any point this season. Their 12-37 record is considerably below expectations for a team that entered the year with a lineup that was supposed to feature Murray, Zion Williamson, Brandon Ingram, CJ McCollum and Trey Murphy III, who scored 40 on 15-of-20 shooting Friday.

Where New Orleans goes from here is anyone’s guess, though the fall guy in these basketball disasters of a season is usually the coach. In the Pelicans’ case, that man is Willie Green. The seat of president of basketball operations David Griffin also may be getting hotter.

While neither is truly to blame for all the bad luck, it’s just often the way the basketball bounces. Lousy records, for whatever reason, tend to lead ownership groups to clean house.

No matter what happens next, though, we know almost for certain that the Pelicans won’t have Murray again until 2025-26.
