Free agent point guard Dennis Smith Jr. has parted ways with Real Madrid with plans to return to the NBA, per league insider Chris Haynes.Dennis Smith Jr, Nets, NBA

Smith, who joined the Spanish powerhouse in mid-January, struggled to adapt to his new surroundings. Despite what was considered a positive attitude, reports from Ramon Alvarez de Mon of Radio Marca indicate that his physical fitness was a concern, ultimately limiting his playing time.

The former NBA lottery pick made only two EuroLeague appearances and was not included on Real Madrid’s roster for the recent Copa del Rey tournament.

A highly touted prospect in the 2017 NBA Draft, Smith was selected ninth overall by the Dallas Mavericks.

Over the course of his seven-year NBA career, he has played for the Mavericks, New York Knicks, Detroit Pistons, Portland Trail Blazers, Charlotte Hornets, and Brooklyn Nets. Smith appeared in 56 games for Brooklyn last season, averaging 6.6 points, 3.6 assists, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.2 steals in 18.9 minutes per game, with shooting splits of .435/.294/.741.

Before joining Real Madrid, Smith signed a G League contract in December, hoping to join the Austin Spurs. However, he was claimed by the Wisconsin Herd, the affiliate of the Milwaukee Bucks. Smith never played a game for the Herd.

Now, after his brief European stint, the 25-year-old guard is focused on securing a return to the NBA for the remainder of the 2024-25 season. While several teams have roster spots, it remains to be seen if anyone gives Smith an opportunity over the next few weeks.
