NBA Notes: Cavs, Lakers, Clippers, Grizzlies, Magic, Thunder

Here’s a look at some of the top storylines dominating the NBA, or should be dominating, as we hit 2025:

1. Cavaliers: The Frog and Contender Story

The Cavaliers have been a tremendous story. While much of the focus has been on the Cavs as a newcomer contender in the East, there’s a delightful subplot that’s captured the attention of fans: the “Cavs Frog.” This quirky mascot brings a weird joy to the team’s amazing early success. Even traditionalists who don’t like mascots seem to enjoy the frog.

Anyway, despite being a newcomer contender, the Cavs are already proving to be a formidable force in the Eastern Conference, thanks at least partially to the rise of Evan Mobley and the improved leadership of Darius Garland. Their performance this season is a testament to new coach Kenny Atkinson, and the Frog is just the cherry on top of a fresh, exciting story.

2. Lakers vs. Clippers: Battle for LA Reignited

The much-anticipated “Battle for LA” could finally become a reality this season. The battle began when Kawhi Leonard signed with the Clippers in 2019, just as Anthony Davis was traded to the Lakers, and now both teams are close in the West standings.

The Clippers, with Leonard nearing a return, having actually impressed, given that Leonard hasn’t played and Paul George is no longer on the team.

Meanwhile, the Lakers, with their new acquisition of Dorian Finney-Smith, feel like they may have improved at least a little.

3. Grizzlies: Morant’s Return and a Contender’s Resurgence

The Memphis Grizzlies, with Ja Morant at the helm, were once seen as one of the league’s most promising young teams. Despite another slew of injuries, they’ve managed to stay second in the Western Conference. Morant’s eventual return is expected to reignite the team’s playoff push, and if they can maintain health and consistency, the Grizzlies will be a serious contender in the West.

Memphis’ deep, talented roster and physical playstyle have been key factors in their success this season, and they are primed to make a deep playoff run, provided they remain focused.

4. Magic: A Rising Contender Despite Injuries

The Orlando Magic are one of the league’s most intriguing stories, particularly because they’ve managed to stay competitive despite losing their two best players — Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner — for months. Sitting near the top of the East, the Magic are defying the odds, with their identity rooted in tough, physical basketball.

Despite being ranked last in 3-point shooting, Orlando’s ability to stay in contention speaks volumes about their grit and the strength of their young core.

Jamahl Mosley’s coaching has been a revelation, and he’s a top candidate for Coach of the Year alongside the likes of Ime Udoka and Kenny Atkinson. If they can get healthy, the Magic could be a formidable force come playoff time.

5. Trade Season: Impact of the Second Apron

The NBA trade season is starting to heat up, but the second apron — a luxury tax restriction that impacts teams’ ability to sign new players — could have a significant impact on the types of moves made.

Teams like Washington, Brooklyn, and New Orleans are expected to lean into the deep 2025 draft class, which might reduce the number of blockbuster trades before the deadline.

However, teams like the Lakers and Warriors have already been active in the trade market and could make more moves to bolster their rosters for the playoff push.

The second apron’s impact will likely make NBA trades more strategic and less about acquiring star players and more about long-term roster building.

6. Thunder: The Future Dynasty in the Making

While small-market teams don’t always garner the attention of larger markets, the Oklahoma City Thunder may be building the NBA’s next dynasty. The Thunder, led by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and supported by a deep, young cast, are positioning themselves as serious title contenders in the coming years.

Unlike past Thunder teams featuring future MVPs like Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, and James Harden, this current iteration of the team seems poised to make a legitimate run at a championship.

And their ability to build through the draft and develop young talent could extend their window as contenders for several years.
