NBA Notes: Pistons, Cade Cunningham, Wizards, Kyshawn George, Jazz

Pistons

The Pistons say Cade Cunningham “continues to progress” as he recovers from a collapsed lung. He’ll be reevaluated in one week.

That’s about all the detail we’ve got.

According to Vincent Goodwill of ESPN, the original hope was a two-week recovery for the lung, followed by a ramp-up period before the playoffs. Whether that timeline still holds isn’t clear yet.

What is clear? Cunningham won’t hit the 65-game threshold for awards.

So no MVP consideration. No All-NBA.

Still, the numbers were there. He averaged 24.5 points, 9.9 assists and 5.6 rebounds while leading Detroit to the top seed in the East.

As an aside, the Pistons haven’t fallen off without him. They’re 6-2 over the past two weeks.

Wizards

Wizards forward Kyshawn George has been ruled out for the final two weeks with a Grade 2 UCL tear in his left elbow. The team expects a full recovery before next season.

George played 48 games, all starts, and took a step forward. He averaged 14.8 points, 5.1 rebounds and 4.5 assists.

That’s something to build on, especially for a team trying to turn the corner.

Jazz

The Jazz are keeping Bez Mbeng around.

Mbeng’s second 10-day deal expired, but Utah is signing him for the rest of the season. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, it’s a two-year contract, with the second year likely non-guaranteed.

Mbeng averaged 5.0 points, 3.4 assists and 1.7 steals in extended minutes.

The shooting numbers weren’t great. The defense was, and that’s what got him another look.
