Lakers
As the Lakers scan the market for defensive help, one name that keeps popping up is Kings guard Keon Ellis. According to Dan Woike of The Athletic, the current asking price around the league is a protected first-round pick.
That’s where opinions split.
Ellis is well regarded by scouts as a defender, shoots better than 40 percent from three for his career, and makes just $2.3 million next season. From a cap standpoint, that’s attractive. From a value standpoint, it’s complicated.
One league source described Ellis as “maybe the most divisive player in the league,” pointing out that Sacramento’s coaching staffs haven’t consistently trusted him despite his tools.
After starting 28 games last season, Ellis has made just two starts this year and is playing under 18 minutes a night.
There’s also the contract angle. Ellis can hit unrestricted free agency in July if he doesn’t sign an extension by February 9, meaning any acquiring team risks a short stay.
Still, the Lakers are kicking the tires. Other names mentioned include Herbert Jones, Andrew Wiggins, Derrick Jones Jr., Terance Mann, Josh Green, and Ayo Dosunmu, though availability and price vary widely. Los Angeles has one tradable first-rounder and limited flexibility otherwise.
Spurs
Don’t expect San Antonio to jump into a Giannis Antetokounmpo sweepstakes.
Even if Milwaukee opens the door, there’s a growing sense around the league that the Spurs won’t seriously pursue it. The reason is simple. They love their core.
Victor Wembanyama is untouchable. Rookie Dylan Harper has been off-limits since draft night. And according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, the same goes for reigning Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle.
“I cannot tell you how much the Spurs loved Castle when they got him,” Windhorst said on The Ryen Russillo Show. “They are convinced he is the perfect guy to have with Victor.”
Bottom line: San Antonio isn’t breaking up its foundation for a win-now swing.
Suns
Phoenix and Toronto did discuss a framework that would have sent Nick Richards to the Raptors for Ochai Agbaji and a second-round pick, per Gerald Bourguet. The Suns weren’t sold.
They didn’t love Agbaji’s fit, weren’t impressed with the pick, and aren’t in a rush to move. For now, talks are parked.
