Hyland, the 26th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, began his career with the Denver Nuggets, where he showed potential as a scoring and shooting threat off the bench.

Over his first season and a half, he averaged 10.9 points in 19.2 minutes per game, shooting .401 from the field, .371 from three-point range, and .860 from the free-throw line across 111 games.

However, concerns about Hyland’s fit alongside Jamal Murray, his defensive struggles, and his dissatisfaction with his role led the Nuggets to trade him to the Clippers at the 2023 trade deadline in exchange for two second-round picks.

Hyland, a former standout at VCU, struggled to find consistency in Los Angeles, playing in just 71 games over two seasons. He averaged 7.8 points per game on .392 shooting from the field, .349 from three, and .812 from the free-throw line.

Now in the final year of his rookie contract, Hyland was part of the deal that sent Bogdan Bogdanovic to the Clippers. If he clears waivers, he will be free to sign with any NBA team, except for the Clippers.

The Hawks will create an open roster spot after waiving Hyland, though they will remain on the hook for the remaining $4.16 million of his salary and his full cap hit for this season.
