A look at potential NBA coaching changes

It’s almost that time of year. And around the NBA, coaching turnover is always part of the offseason conversation.

As Luke Adams of Hoops Rumors notes, it’s rare to go through a full cycle without at least one change, and with roughly half the league’s coaches hired since 2024, movement remains a constant across the profession.

A couple of situations stand out early.

In New Orleans and Portland, interim coaches James Borrego and Tiago Splitter are still operating without long-term clarity. Borrego has the Pelicans playing better of late, while Splitter’s situation with the Trail Blazers remains tied to uncertainty surrounding Chauncey Billups’ status.

Elsewhere, Billy Donovan’s future with the Bulls has become a talking point, with speculation that he could step away after an emotional season. There has also been some chatter around Jamahl Mosley and the Magic following a disappointing stretch.

Then there are the more subtle situations.

Doc Rivers with the Bucks and Steve Kerr with the Warriors aren’t viewed as being in immediate danger, but both face questions — whether performance-related or contractual.

And as always, the playoffs could change everything.

Even teams with expectations — including the Cavaliers, Timberwolves, Rockets, and Knicks — could face tough decisions if things end earlier than expected.

Either way, today, it’s mostly speculation. But history says it won’t stay that way for long.
