Free agent point guard Dennis Smith Jr. is set to sign a G League contract ahead of this week’s Winter Showcase in Orlando, sources told NBA insider Jake Fischer.Dennis Smith Jr, NBA, G League

Other NBA veterans like Frank Kaminsky and Devonte’ Graham have also signed G League contracts ahead of the Showcase, hoping to catch the attention of the league’s decision-makers.

The details of which team Smith will join remain unclear, but Marc Stein of The Stein Line points out that the Mexico City Capitanes and Long Island Nets are at the top of the NBAGL’s waiver order.

That means those teams will have first dibs once the deal is official. As of now, Smith has yet to be listed in the G League’s transaction log.

The ninth overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, Smith has played in 326 regular-season games across seven seasons for the Mavericks, Knicks, Pistons, Trail Blazers, Hornets, and Nets.

In 2023-24, he appeared in 56 games for Brooklyn, averaging 6.6 points, 3.6 assists, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.2 steals in 18.9 minutes per contest, shooting .435 from the field, .294 from three, and .741 from the free-throw line.

Though not known for his scoring or shooting, with career shooting percentages of 40.7% from the field and 29.8% from three, Smith has carved out a reputation as a solid ball handler and distributor. His ability to defend on the ball remains one of his strongest attributes.

But it’s clear the 27-year-old point guard will be looking to impress scouts and executives at the Winter Showcase and earn another chance in the NBA. The event runs from Thursday through Sunday, with each team playing at least two games.
