Nuggets’ Josh Kroenke, who fired GM, will serve as interim GM

Nuggets vice chairman Josh Kroenke will serve as the team’s interim president of basketball operations for the remainder of the season following the dismissal of general manager Calvin Booth on Tuesday, according to NBA insider Chris Haynes.Josh Kroenke, Nuggets, NBA

Kroenke will be supported in the interim role by vice president of basketball operations Ben Tenzer and assistant general manager Tommy Balcetis, Haynes reported.

A comprehensive search for a permanent head of basketball operations is expected to begin once Denver’s season concludes.

Assuming a new general manager or president is hired early in the offseason, Kroenke is not expected to make significant basketball-related decisions during his temporary tenure. The Nuggets have 15 players on standard contracts and no imminent two-way promotions are anticipated, making further roster moves before the offseason unlikely.

It remains unclear whether Tenzer or Balcetis will be considered for the full-time role or if the organization will look externally for Booth’s replacement. The timing of the front office hire may also influence the team’s head coaching search, following the firing of coach Michael Malone.

Kroenke is expected to play a central role in both the front office and coaching hires as the organization prepares for a pivotal offseason.

Kroenke, 44, is an heir to the Walmart family inheritance and Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, his father Stan’s sports-media businesses. He played college basketball at Missouri.
