NBA offseason trade idea sends Karl-Anthony Towns to Mavericks

File this under interesting. And maybe a little wild, even for the NBA.

Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report tossed out a hypothetical that would send Karl-Anthony Towns from the Knicks to the Mavericks.

The idea? Build something loud.

Dallas would roll out a trio of Kyrie Irving, Cooper Flagg and Towns. That’s a lot of offense. A lot of spacing. A lot of skill.

Going back to New York in this proposal: P.J. Washington, Klay Thompson, Daniel Gafford and two future first-round picks.

So yeah, not exactly small change.

“Pick-and-pops between Flagg and Towns could be a nightmare to defend,” Pincus wrote, via Ashish Mathur.

He’s got a point. Towns is still one of the league’s premier shooting bigs, putting up 20.1 points and 11.9 rebounds while hitting 36.8 percent from deep.

Put that next to a young NBA playmaker like Flagg, and the floor opens up in a hurry. But this isn’t just about fit.

There’s been some quiet  noise around Towns’ role in New York. And when that happens, teams start poking around. That’s just how it works.

Would the Knicks actually move him? Hard to say. Would Dallas pay that price? Also hard to say.

Fun to think about, though. And that’s kind of the point.
